The idea for “ZaZen” was born from a meditation I  experienced in a Buddhist temple Ryukoku-zenji in Itoshima during last year's artist residency at Studio Kura. It was 4:30 in the morning, outside it was still dark, and we sat in the room with windows oriented to the garden. The Buddhist monk gave me an egg and a mirror. The point was to balance an egg on the mirror.

This gesture stayed deep within me.

I was mesmerised by the surreality of finding balance and by the power of the message carried by such a small and common object like an egg! In my head, an important moment happened.

To find balance in life is a thing all people long for. “ZaZen” always looks different, it changes with the materials I find and work with. I use what is available locally, without attachment to the quality or type of material, as when I paint. I continue developing “ZaZen installation further, letting each version be unique with local fusions. When I am working on the “ZaZen,” I live in the presence.
